A Pain in the Neck

Two herniated discs in my neck from a work injury have kept me under a doctor's care for most of this decade. Surgery has always been an option, but one I've tried very hard to avoid. If you've ever experienced a disabling injury, you know how hard the physical, mental and emotional challenges can be.

Today, after years of struggling... I had a significant victory. I've managed my injury and pain so well (without surgery) that I no longer need to see my doctor. It's a huge milestone for me.

My doctor admitted that he still doesn't understand how I'm doing so well considering the nature of my injury (my MRI isn't pretty). But he was just as happy to see me walk out the door with out an appointment to come back. If I need the medical care, it's still available to me at a moment's notice. We'll just be taking it on an "as needed" basis from now on.

Although my decision to be a stay-at-home-dad had nothing to do with my injury... in hindsight, it had a lot to do with my ability to heal. Funny how life works out.
